Chinese National Posing as Filipino Arrested in Zamboanga Sibugay

Zamboanga Sibugay, Philippines – A Chinese national was apprehended by the Bureau of Immigration (BI) for misrepresenting himself as a Filipino during an operation in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay on April 16. This arrest aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to strengthen border control and enforce immigration laws.

According to a press release from the Bureau of Immigration, the suspect, identified as 51-year-old Wenyu Lin, was caught using multiple government-issued identification cards under different aliases, including “Anson Lais Lim.” These IDs, which included a driver’s license, tax identification cards, and health and postal IDs, all bore his photograph but carried fictitious names.

Details of the Arrest

  • Surveillance and Operation: The BI Intelligence Division, in collaboration with military and police units, conducted surveillance before confirming Lin’s location and moving in for the arrest.
  • Fraudulent Documents: Lin admitted to owning the fake IDs and was found to have an expired passport, which had not been renewed since 2011.
  • Unauthorized Activities: Despite holding a retiree visa, Lin was engaged in unauthorized activities, raising concerns about public safety and national security.
  • Family Misrepresentation: Authorities also discovered that Lin had allegedly misrepresented his minor children as Filipino nationals by securing Philippine passports under false identities.

Legal Proceedings and Statement from BI

Lin was arrested on-site, informed of his rights, and taken to the local police station for booking and documentation. He now faces deportation proceedings.

BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado emphasized the gravity of identity fraud, stating, “This case exposes a deliberate and systematic attempt to undermine Philippine laws by falsely claiming Filipino identity—not only for himself but even for his children. We will pursue such offenders with full force of the law.”

Warning to Foreign Nationals

The Bureau of Immigration reiterated its warning that foreign nationals who misrepresent themselves or violate the conditions of their stay in the Philippines will face apprehension and deportation.
