Details of the Arrests

According to a statement from CBP, the arrests occurred between April 23 and April 27 during a raid on eight cruise ships docked in San Diego. The operation led to the detention of 28 seafarers, including 26 Filipinos, one Portuguese, and one Indonesian. CBP confirmed that 27 of the 28 individuals were involved in activities related to the receipt, possession, transportation, distribution, or viewing of CSEM.

The CBP canceled the visas of those involved, and the individuals were subsequently deported to their respective countries. The Philippine Consulate General in Los Angeles confirmed the deportation of the Filipino seafarers and expressed concern over the incident.

Philippine Government’s Response

The Philippine Consulate General stated that it had informed the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) through its Los Angeles office about the situation. Upon their return to the Philippines, the deported seafarers are eligible for assistance from the DMW and other government agencies.

The Consulate also acknowledged CBP’s authority to enforce U.S. laws at ports of entry, emphasizing that such actions are beyond external intervention.

Cruise Line’s Statement

Disney Cruise, one of the companies involved, confirmed that some of its staff members were among those arrested. The company reiterated its zero-tolerance policy for such behavior and assured full cooperation with law enforcement. Disney also clarified that the majority of the arrested individuals were not from their cruise line.

Warnings for Filipino Seafarers

This incident underscores the importance of compliance with international laws and regulations. Filipino seafarers have been repeatedly warned about the consequences of engaging in illegal activities, including child pornography and drug trafficking, during government-sponsored seminars.

The deportation of these seafarers serves as a stark reminder of the severe repercussions of violating laws abroad.
