OWWA and CHED Launch Scholarship Program for OFWs to Earn College Degrees

Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) now have a clearer path to earning a college degree, thanks to a new partnership between the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). This initiative aims to provide educational assistance to qualified OFWs, making it easier for them to pursue higher education and secure better opportunities upon returning to the Philippines.

According to a press release from OWWA, this program is part of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to strengthen reintegration efforts for OFWs and ensure they have access to opportunities for a brighter future. The program, called the Lifelong Learning Education Assistance Program for Overseas Filipino Workers (LEAP-OFWs), allows OFWs to enroll in the Expanded Tertiary Education Equivalency and Accreditation Program (ETEEAP).

Key Features of the LEAP-OFWs Program

The LEAP-OFWs program offers several benefits to help OFWs achieve their educational goals:

  • Financial Assistance: Qualified OFWs admitted to the ETEEAP program can receive scholarships or educational support from OWWA.
  • Flexible Learning Options: The program is designed to accommodate the schedules and experiences of OFWs, allowing them to study while working abroad.
  • Work Experience as Academic Credit: Years of professional experience can be credited toward earning a degree, eliminating the need to start from scratch.

This means that OFWs can leverage their work experience to fast-track their college education, even without attending traditional classroom settings.

A Pathway to a Better Future

The program underscores the government’s commitment to recognizing the sacrifices of OFWs and ensuring their hard work abroad translates into better opportunities at home. By providing financial and academic support, the initiative aims to empower OFWs to build a more stable future for themselves and their families.

For OFWs interested in the program, OWWA assures that the process is accessible even for those currently working overseas. This initiative is a testament to OWWA dedication to serving OFWs with compassion and purpose.

As OWWA puts it, “Your sacrifices abroad will not go to waste. We are here to help you build a brighter future.”
