PBBM: Duterte’s Arrest Highlights PH Commitment to Interpol

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. confirmed that the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte was carried out in compliance with the Philippines’ international commitments as a member of the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol).

During a Palace briefing last March 11, 2025, President Marcos explained that Interpol Manila had received an official copy of the International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant against Mr. Duterte. The warrant was executed by the Department of Justice (DOJ) Prosecutor General upon Mr. Duterte’s arrival at Ninoy Aquino International Airport from Hong Kong.

“Interpol sought our assistance, and we acted accordingly,” the President stated. “As part of the global community and as a democracy, we honor our international obligations. Failing to do so would compromise future collaborations in cases involving Filipino nationals abroad,” he added.

Mr. Duterte, accompanied by his common-law wife, Honeylet Avanceña, and members of his party, landed at 9:20 a.m. on Cathay Pacific flight CX 907. Following his arrest, he was taken into government custody at Villamor Air Base. Shortly thereafter, the aircraft that transported him departed for The Hague, Netherlands, where Mr. Duterte will face charges of crimes against humanity linked to his controversial war on drugs.
