The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) is a fairly new government agency tasked to hasten the actions to protect the rights and welfare of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). It was created, established, and constituted by virtue of the Department of Migrant Workers Act or the Republic Act No. 11641, the new agency took over the power and functions of seven others including the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), DFA’s Office of the Undersecretary for Migrant Workers’ Affairs (OUMWA), the International Labor Affairs Bureau (ILAB), DOLE’s Philippine Overseas Labor Offices (POLO), the National Maritime Polytechnic (NMP), OWWA’s National Reintegration Center for OFWs (NRC), and DSWD’s Office of the Social Welfare Attaché (OSWA).
With the consolidated power of the DMW, they are expected to facilitate numerous OFW-related functions, including:
- Facilitation of the overseas employment and reintegration of OFWs in consideration of the national development programs of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA)
- Empowerment and protection of OFWs through continuous training and knowledge development
- Social protection and assistance to all OFWs (returning or otherwise) and their families
- Monitoring of rules, regulations, and implementation of recruitment, employment, deployment, and reintegration of OFWs
- Institutionalization of accreditation for private recruitment activities, and
- Coordination of private and public labor migration programs and policies.
In an effort to align with their mandate of hastening the delivery of their services to OFWs, would-be OFWs, and their families, DMW has set up offices in different regions, along with One Stop Service Centers for OFWs (OSSCO).

Summary
Sure, the government is not perfect, but with the creation of a dedicated department solely for migrant Filipino workers, one can’t help but hope that the safety and welfare of the Filipinos abroad can be managed better. After all, it is no news that for the longest time, the OFWs have helped keep the Philippine economy afloat amid news of distressed and abused OFWs.
With the creation of the DMW, the government has hopefully created a single information system that will serve as a database for all overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), and hopefully streamline and speed up OFW services along with it.
