South Korea – Seoul has directed its citizens to leave the Middle East as fighting between the United States and Iran grows more dangerous, adding to a wave of government warnings that could affect the many Filipinos working across the region.
According to a report, South Korea’s Foreign Ministry issued the call after meeting with officials from 17 of its diplomatic missions, including its embassies in Iran and Israel. The meeting focused on reviewing safety measures for Korean nationals and vessels in the region.
What Seoul Is Telling Its Citizens
Most Middle Eastern countries have been under a Level 3 Travel Advisory since March. That level urges travelers to leave unless staying is truly necessary.
Second Vice Foreign Minister Kim Jina laid out the guidance clearly:
- Short-term visitors should leave promptly unless they have compelling reasons to remain
- Korean vessels operating in the Red Sea need to stay on high alert
The warning about ships comes amid recent military tensions involving Yemen ‘s Houthis and Saudi Arabia, which have made shipping lanes in the area far riskier.
India Issues Its Own Warnings
South Korea is not acting alone. India has told its citizens to postpone all travel to Iran until the security situation improves.
A fresh advisory from the Indian Embassy in Iran urged nationals to consider temporarily leaving the country while flights are still available. Meanwhile, the Indian Embassy in Jordan asked its citizens to exercise caution and follow instructions from local authorities.
Why Tensions Flared Again
The current situation is especially frustrating because peace seemed within reach not long ago. Last month, the US and Iran signed a Pakistani-mediated memorandum of understanding meant to end their conflict and build toward a lasting agreement.
That progress unraveled quickly. Tensions escalated again last week over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route, with both sides exchanging attacks.

While these advisories come from South Korea and India, they signal how seriously governments are treating the situation.
