What is Bugtong

What is Bugtong in English?

In English, perhaps the closest translation of “bugtong” is “riddle,” which the Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines as “a mystifying, misleading, or puzzling question posed as a problem to be solved or guessed.”

However, we believe that this definition is rather broad. Indeed, the “bugtong” is something that must be solved or guessed, but it also has certain characteristics in terms of form and meaning that are particular to the Filipino language. Let’s take a closer look at the meaning of “bugtong.”

What is the Meaning of Bugtong?

In the Philippines, a “bugtong” is an utterance that contains a “double” or hidden meaning. It may come in the form of a declarative sentence, or an interrogative sentence (i.e. a question). The answer may be referring to an animal, plant, clothing, or any other item used or seen by Filipinos.

In the past, asking and answering riddles or “bugtong” was a popular pastime among Pinoys. These days, it is usually taught as part of the Filipino language subject in school, and remains as part of our rich language and heritage.
