The Philippine Presidential Awards was introduced in 1991, the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) stated in a press release. Since then, the prestigious awards have been conferred on 485 individuals and organizations based in 52 countries and territories.

Notably, the Presidential Awards puts emphasis on the time-honored Filipino values of bayanihan, which is a convergence of pakikipagkapwa (fellowship), pagtutulungan (teamwork), and pagkakaisa (unity). There are four award categories, as follows:

  1. Lingkod sa Kapwa Pilipino (LINKAPIL) Award. This is given to overseas Filipino individuals or organizations who have made outstanding or significant contributions to progress and developments in the Philippines.
  2. Banaag Award. This is conferred on overseas Filipino individuals or organizations whose contributions have benefited a sector of the diaspora or advanced the causes and interests of Filipino communities abroad.
  3. Pamana ng Pilipino Award. This is given to overseas Filipino individuals whose talent and excellence in their work or profession have brought honor and recognition to the country.
  4. Kaanib ng Bayan Award. This is conferred on foreign individuals (natural-born) and organizations who have greatly contributed to Philippine progress and development, or advanced the causes and interests of Filipino communities overseas.
